Litho vs Digital: Which printing technique is best for your needs?

In the world of printing, there are two main technologies that dominate the industry: digital and lithographic (litho) printing. Both have their unique advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between the two often depends on your specific needs and requirements. In this blog post, we will delve into the pros and cons of both digital and litho printing to help you make an informed decision.

 Digital Printing

Digital printing is a modern printing technique that involves printing digital-based images using a method similar to a colour office printer. It’s a versatile and flexible option that’s ideal for small to medium print runs.

 Pros of Digital Printing:

 1. Speed: Digital printing doesn’t require plates, which means you can move from the design stage to the final print quickly. This makes it ideal for projects with tight deadlines.

 2. Cost-Effective for Small Runs: Digital printing is more cost-effective for small runs as there are no initial setup costs.

 3. Personalization: Digital printing allows for variable data printing, meaning each print can be personalized. This is perfect for direct mail campaigns or projects that require individual personalization.

 Cons of Digital Printing:

 1. Limited Color Matching: While digital printing technology has improved significantly, it still can’t match the color range and accuracy of litho printing.

2. Less Material Versatility: Digital printers can’t handle a wide range of paper types and sizes compared to litho printers.

 Litho Printing

Litho printing, short for lithography, is a traditional printing method that uses plates to transfer an image onto paper. It’s best suited for large volume print runs and when color accuracy is paramount.

 Pros of Litho Printing:

 1. High Quality: Litho printing offers superior image and color quality. It can produce sharp, clean images and lines with greater detail than digital printing.

2. Cost-Effective for Large Runs: While the initial setup cost for litho printing is high, the cost per unit decreases with the more prints you make, making it cost-effective for large print runs.

 3. Material Versatility: Litho printing can handle a wide range of paper types, sizes, and finishes, offering more flexibility.

 Cons of Litho Printing:

 1. Time-Consuming: The process of creating plates and setting up the press can be time-consuming, making litho printing less suitable for urgent projects.

2. Less Eco-Friendly: The process of making plates and using inks in litho printing can have a higher environmental impact compared to digital printing.

In conclusion, the choice between digital and litho printing depends on your specific needs. If you need a quick, cost-effective solution for small to medium print runs with the option for personalization, digital printing is the way to go. However, if you’re looking for superior quality, cost-effectiveness for large volumes, and material versatility, litho printing would be the best choice. Always consider your project’s requirements, budget, and timeline before deciding on the printing method.

The Benefits of Using FSC Material for Your Product Packaging

In the current era of environmental consciousness, businesses are increasingly seeking sustainable solutions to reduce their environmental impact. One such solution is the use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified materials for product packaging. The FSC is a global, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. It provides a certification system that ensures the materials used come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits. Here are some reasons why it is beneficial to use FSC material for your product packaging:

  • Environmental Sustainability: FSC-certified materials are sourced from forests that are managed responsibly, ensuring that they are not contributing to deforestation or habitat destruction. This means that by using FSC materials, you are actively contributing to the preservation of our planet’s forests and biodiversity.
  • Social Responsibility: FSC certification also ensures that the rights of indigenous people and local communities are respected. Forests are often home to vulnerable communities, and the FSC ensures that their rights to land, tenure, and resources are upheld. By using FSC materials, you are supporting ethical business practices and contributing to social justice.
  • Consumer Appeal: Today’s consumers are more environmentally conscious than ever before. They are actively seeking out products that are sustainable and ethically sourced. By using FSC-certified materials, you are demonstrating your commitment to sustainability, which can enhance your brand’s reputation and appeal to these conscious consumers.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Many countries and regions are implementing stricter regulations regarding the sourcing and use of raw materials. Using FSC-certified materials can help ensure that your business is compliant with these regulations, reducing the risk of fines or sanctions.
  • Economic Benefits: While it may seem that using FSC materials could increase your costs, the reality is that it can actually provide economic benefits in the long run. By demonstrating your commitment to sustainability, you can attract more customers and increase your market share. Additionally, by ensuring regulatory compliance, you can avoid potential fines and sanctions that could harm your bottom line.

In conclusion, using FSC-certified materials for your product packaging is not just good for the environment, it’s good for business. It allows you to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, enhance your brand’s reputation, ensure regulatory compliance, and even provide economic benefits. So, if you’re looking for a way to make your business more sustainable, consider making the switch to FSC materials.

Bridge Media Group wins Gold at the Environmental packaging Awards

Client – Sega Europe Ltd
Project – Football manager 2023

Bridge Media Group are delighted to win this award, validating all our hard work ensuring that we produce the most sustainable packaging we can for our clients. Below are some details regarding the product itself.

The computer Games industry is well known for its plastic game cases. We were challenged with producing a pack that was robust and was as environmentally friendly as possible. This has been an ongoing development with SEGA for a few years, with the 2023 pack being completely plastic free.

The material used is a double thickness folding box board, made from 100% recycled fibres, The ink and varnish is water based. The pack can be put into standard recycling bins. The book that comes in the pack is also made from 100% recycled fibres, and printed in the same way as the outer pack. Even the glue is water based. Both the pack and book materials are FSC accredited.

The game publisher Sega, have removed the plastic disc and the pack now contains a download code only. They have calculated that this pack has reduced the carbon footprint for Football Manager 23 by 47% compared to the 2022 version, and removed around 20 tonnes of plastic use.

The pack is also lighter than its predecessors, which saves fuel used in transport and postage costs.

A Testimonial from our Client

Bridge Media Group has been a preferred supplier to Sega Europe for a long time, so when my team was challenged to develop eco-friendly packaging for our products, in particular the best-selling Football Manager product, we turned to them for advice and ideas.

The initial challenge was to remove as much plastic from the packaging as possible, particularly to replace the plastic disc case. What we were delighted to end up with was plastic free packaging, that was made entirely from recycled material, printed, varnished, and glued with eco alternatives, an eco-friendly shrink-wrap, and the pack is completely recyclable.

This has been a massive step forward in our company’s drive to reduce our carbon footprint, reduce plastic usage, and to use recycled materials and planet friendly processes wherever possible.
